Class highlights

First, I would like to say that I really enjoyed the class, learned a lot and it was fun. I had a couple if aha moments during the length of the course. One was when Andrew was presenting his  presentation. I was not aware that companies would go through the trouble of pretending to be green in order to better sell a product. When i sit and think about it it makes complete sense but I had never noticed or really cared enough to question it before. Another good moment I had, was when I was researching my own topic. I was surprised to find out that video game violence is not the cause for violence among kids. The violence "epidemic" is nothing more than a frenzy that was thought up, created and mass communicated by the media. I thought this was interesting and it made me wonder what else is the media pushing without factual scientific backing. Overall I enjoyed the class and I would recommend it to friends.

Death of LimeWire!

Lime wire after being used my millions of people for years was finally shut down this year. The users of Limewire would most of the time download and share copyright material. The owners of the web service are currently being sued for copyright infringement.

Propaganda in advertising

<object width="480" height="385"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/dQJ2SegGWyc?fs=1&amp;hl=en_US"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/dQJ2SegGWyc?fs=1&amp;hl=en_US" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="480" height="385"></embed></object>

This ad uses oversimplification because its implying to the audience that a Twix bar will solve a complicated situation like getting  a girl. It also uses Slogans. "Need a moment? Chew it over with Twix". Both of these techniques are used to appeal to peoples humor. This makes them like the product and eventually remember it at a store and buy it when they see it.

Internet

So I just looked at the list and wow was I surprised. How many are there? lets see.... A LOT! There must be roughly 200 websites listed. I'm not very big on the internet and use it for essentials like email so I don't know many of these sites. I did recognize Facebook, Myspace, Twitter and Yelp. Out of those I only use Facebook and Yelp. I found it funny that this website (Blogger) is not on the list. I did see Bloggster on there but Im under the impression that they are to different websites ( I might be wrong). I hadn't heard of Lafango until I saw on someone else's Internet blog post and they mentioned it. Is a website were you share music.  When I found it on the list I looked it up and liked it. I'm going to give it a try since I still use Limewire to get my music. Since I don't use social websites much its hard to think of an incident. Although, for my birthday this year, Facebook really helped me get the word out to all my friend about the party and it made it easier than sending everyone a txt message.

Movies

My favorite movie of 2009-2010 is titled Shutter Island. I had already read the book and decided to give the movie a shot. I'm usually disappointed when a book is turned into movie but I absolutely loved this film. I would have chose this same movie as my all time favorite because I liked it so much but ill change it up. I like a lot of movies but one of my all time favorite is titled American Me . I like this movie because it depict a sad reality in the Hispanic community.

Magazine

Title: Sanguinarios

Concept: This magazine is different because it is specifically for a growing trend. A large amount of the Hispanic community has adopted a certain  "corrido" lifestyle. This trend has been around for three years and it is growing faster than ever. Now is the perfect time to start a magazine and give this audience what they need.

Readers: Age: 16 to 30, Gender: male, Ethnicity: Mexican-American, Income: Wealthy or aspiring to be wealthy, Self Image/ Identification: Bad Ass.

No Competition Whatsoever. No other magazine serves this demographic

Advertisement: Expensive clothing brands (Armani, Dolce&Gabbana,Ed-Hardy,etc..), Hard liquor companies (Buchanan, Remy Martin, Jack Daniels, Patron...) Car companies like Chevy (Silverados specifically), Chrysler, Ford...

Articles: News and updates about drug trafficking here in the U.S but more importantly in Mexico. News updates about the drug war and all the Mexican drug cartels. Updates on the newest albums from all the different artist that sing to this demographic (this is very important and probably the reason for most interest in the magazine because there are so many new and upcoming artist). Articles on clubs and events at those clubs. articles on what is in and out within the lyfestyle. Articles about all the new cars and their reviews.

Front cover: The front cover would read In Spanish but Im going to just post it in English. It would have a picture of him with a headline  Drug-lord (El M1) captured in Sinaloa, Mexico and awaiting trial! Larry Hernandez interviewed! ..... a picture of the artist.

My Three Books

My first book is titled Holes by Louis Sachar. I first read this book when I was in the fourth grade. I had read before, but this was the book that had me keeping the night light on for the first time. I ended up reading it i think four times! Another book that has had a great influence on me is The Common Good by Noam Chomski. I read this book during high school for fun because my history teacher recommended it. It truly changed my perspective   on how U.S government is run.  I loved it so much that I decided on buying the entire Real Story Series. The last book that I want to talk about is titled The Pale Blue Eye. I Loved this book! I just recently finished it and i recommended it to anyone reading this. Check the link out... definitely a must read type of book..

Media Impact

For my project I would want to test T.V use and it relationship to the development with young children . I would conduct and experiment of about 80 children all around the age of two. The experiment would be for the duration of about an entire year. I would have a control group which would be children that  had no T.V usage and a mixture of different groups watching different types of media on T.V. The objective would be to see if any of the T.V watching kids by the end of the ear showed any signs of modeling and if so to what extent. My hypothesis is that they most likely would. It would be interesting to also find if "intelligent programing" actually shows modeling as well. I think an experiment of this type probably has been done before but since i have a young two year old cousin that watches T.V like crazy I found it interesting.

Media Autobio

Coming into this class I have had enough experience with mass media to know a little about how it works and why. I'm not necessarily tech savy so I tend to stick to old school things like books, basic internet and movies. I do use the internet often and I really appreciate the practicality of it but I hate messing with URL's, codes and all that stuff. Besides my email the only two websites that I use often are Craigslist and Vwvortex.com. I like to work on cars for a hobby and use Vortex because its a cool forum that has a very chill community of people with the same likes as me. As far as books, magazines and newspapers, I only use one of these types of print often which is books. I'm an English Lit major and really enjoy reading fiction. My favorite types of books are mystery novels. I rarely read the newspaper and I'm not subscribed with any magazines. I love to listening to music on my ipod and like dancing. I don't listen to mainstream hip-hop much but I like old school rap. I love Mexican music like "Corridos" and "Banda" if any of you know what that is; I'm actually listening to it right now. Before I had and i pod I used to use the radio everyday but now I listen to it less and less. I watch T.V everyday for an our or two. Usually I watch Discovery or The History Channel. In the future I plan on getting my B.A in English Literature and going to law school afterward. I want to become a corporate lawyer. I don't think I'm going to have a career directly in the mass media industry but I can see myself using many of these tools as an everyday part of my life.
